ADVAITA VEDANTA: A METHOD-HINDU UNIVERSITY OF AMERICA
Hindu University of America offers many courses such as Vedic courses, Sanskrit language courses, Vedic studies courses, Hindu Veda.
Learning Outcome:-
Develop a clear understanding of Advaita Vedanta as a method and its implications.
Gain a comprehensive understanding of the epistemology of Advaita and its role as a key to understanding the vision of the Upanishads.
Connect epistemology with the ontology of advaita and the fulfillment of its soteriological end.
In this course we will explore the methods (prakriya) used in the Upanishads to reveal the existence and nature of non-dual reality. We begin with a basic discussion of advaita epistemology in order to understand the Upanisad's important claim that it provides not only information about non-dual reality but also the means by which it can be directly known. We first read carefully Sankara's introduction to the Brahmasutra and the commentary on the Taittiriya Upanisad 2.1.1 to establish the basic principles of superposition and negation as well as implicative statements. With these parameters, we will study the dialogues in the Mundaka, Taittirya and Mandukya upanisads, which use the basic method of investigating cause-effect, as well as methods of analyzing the levels of our waking experience and analyzing the three states of waking, dreaming and sleeping. In the process, we will connect what we discover with the soteriological goal of Advaita Vedanta – liberation from human suffering and the cycle of birth and death.
