MA SANSKRIT – WHAT OUR STUDENTS SAY- HINDU UNIVERSITY OF AMERICA

Hindu University of America offers many courses such as Vedic courses, Sanskrit language courses, Vedic studies courses, Hindu Veda.

The Master's Certificate in Sanskrit Studies, offered by HUA in collaboration with the MIT School of Vedic Sciences, is the only graduate-level program of its kind in Sanskrit in the US. Delivered primarily in Sanskrit as the medium of instruction, it is an immersive, practice-oriented course of study that provides direct, unmediated access to the source texts. It prepares students to explore ancient and classical texts such as the Vedas, Upaniṣads, Rāmāyaṇa, Mahābhārata, Purāṇas, Shastras and Prasthāna Traya without relying on translations. The program has been met with a mostly positive response so far.

Here are some excerpts from what some of our current students have to say about the program.

Namaste!

I have just completed the first semester of the Master's program in Sanskrit offered by the Hindu University of America in collaboration with the MIT-School of Vedic Sciences. It is offered in a two-year, three-year, four-year variant. I chose the two-year program because I wanted to devote two years to concentrated study. I was wondering how the timing would work with a full time job and family commitments. It worked quite well because the class timings are suitable for different time zones. There are six 1.5-hour lessons per week. We need a few more hours to study, listen to tapes, assignments, etc. So with about 15 hours of commitment each week, I've done pretty well for the first semester. The faculty and acharyas are very knowledgeable. They are quick to clarify doubts and answer students' queries anytime - in live class, online class discussion forums, emails and messages. What I managed to learn in the first semester is amazing. The Vyakaranam course not only introduced us to Ashtaadhyaayi but allowed us to interpret the sutras ourselves. The Vedic Sciences Foundation course is very unique and provides a very scientific and structured view of our Shastras and Shaastra-Granthaas. While this Master's program focuses on teaching the language and saahityam, it also offers popular electives to explore the wealth of knowledge available in the language – the Vedas, Vedanta and Shastras. I am very thankful to MIT, HUA and acharayas for offering this program online with affordable scheduling options.

I have always been passionate about languages – how they work, how we use them to communicate and represent knowledge, and how they reflect human evolution. My early research in artificial intelligence, natural language processing and English-Hindi machine translation deepened this interest. That is why Sanskrit has always fascinated me. After 3 years of self-study, I decided to pursue a formal master's degree. After researching the available options, I found that the MIT School of Vedic Sciences (SVS), offered in collaboration with the Hindu University of America, best suited my needs. It was fully online so I could do it from home and get an officially recognized master's degree at the same time. Above all, I liked the width of the shot and the modern and flexible feel of the outline. Now in my second semester, I am excited and deeply grateful for my choice.

This program combines the best of both worlds – brilliant faculty deeply trained in traditional Sanskrit knowledge systems and learning methodologies that utilize the latest technology platforms to make learning globally and flexibly accessible. The faculty is extremely approachable and committed to fine-tuning the course as much as possible to suit the best interests of the students. Another blessing was the wonderful group of students passionate about the subject and supportive of each other.

The biggest surprise of the course for me, and the most pleasant and valuable, was discovering the incredibly scientific, holistic and integrated nature of our Indian knowledge systems. This methodology of creating, discussing, inferring and encoding new knowledge, as well as the timeless value of the vast knowledge already encoded in Sanskrit, is best learned in this language. My fluency in Sanskrit has improved by leaps and bounds due to the immersive exposure to the high quality Shastric Sanskrit taught by all the teachers here. I am very much looking forward to sharing my knowledge and insights about the scientific nature of our shastras and exploring how they can be used to enrich all our modern disciplines.

I definitely and warmly recommend the MIT-SVS-HUA MA Sanskrit program to anyone who wants to explore Indian knowledge systems in depth. I consider it value for money.

Namaste!

After completing courses in the distance education program at the bachelor's level offered by SamskritaBharati, I was looking forward to enrolling in the master's level Sanskrit program. It sounded like a dream come true when I heard about the master's program offered by the Hindu University of America in collaboration with the MIT School of Vedic Sciences. I quickly took the necessary Sanskrit proficiency test. I was quite apprehensive about how the program would turn out, but once the classes started, all the anxiety turned into pure joy and I felt like he was offering me something very special.

The timing of lessons, assignments, availability of study materials - everything was very well thought out at the faculty. As for the teachers, there are no words to express their depth of knowledge, teaching skills and abundance of patience. However, these are not just any ordinary university teachers. These are the best of the class of Acharyas in their respective fields. In addition to prescribing a book and conducting an end-of-semester exam, this course had hands-on, interactive sessions with the rarest of Acharyas, all in Samskritam. The assignments forced us to think and express our understanding in Samskritam. And every assignment was thoroughly scrutinized and constructive feedback was provided. The course is beautifully structured - it starts with a bird's eye view of Vedic literature and then dives into the important components of our shastras to enable students to study the original shastras - on their own!
