The Texts and Traditions area (called Shastra and Sampradaya in Sanskrit) is a collection of courses that take the student at HUA into a much deeper exploration of individual knowledge systems rooted in and emerging from Hindu thought. Hindu knowledge traditions refer to the knowledge, innovations and practices of indigenous and local communities that have evolved from experience gained over centuries and adapted to local culture and environment, and passed down both orally and through formal textual learning from generation to generation, across very long periods of time. These courses, including courses in Vedānta, Yoga, Áyurveda, Jyotiṣa, Vāstu and Tantra, allow students to develop deep specialization in their areas of interest.

Immersion in these knowledge systems, which include structured study abroad opportunities, helps students not only understand the authentic and original intent of these traditions, but also examine their content to assess their significance to the communities that still preserve and maintain their relevance to our contemporary world. and the value they might have for the future of humanity. This area of study also includes an examination of the lives and works of modern masters of Hindu dharma who have had a tremendous impact on contemporary Hindu life and society. Students can delve deep into the life of a single great Master or view a collection of masterpieces and their interrelationships.

Further developing the idea of Sampradaya, i.e. tradition, this field of study examines the history and continuity of Hindu thought across long eons of time, from its Vedic roots to the continuing development of Hindu thought, from a comparative and contemporary perspective. It also enables research into the intersections and confluences where Hindu thought has migrated globally through the inspiration of these modern masters and movements to generate new expressions and forms in non-Hindu societies and communities.
