Exploring Bhagavad Gita: Beginner's Sanskrit Course | HUA

Certificate Program in Bhagavad Gita Through Sanskrit (BGTS) – Beginner Phase is a 4-course sequence for students aged 9th grade and above, who have a passion to learn the Bhagavad Gita through a new language. It is the first of three phases - Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced - that together comprise the BGTS. The course assumes no prior knowledge of the Sanskrit language, but students should know the devanAgari script. The medium of instruction is English, making it accessible to a global audience.

The Beginner Phase of BGTS is a 44-week detailed study that prepares beginner-level students to achieve a level of comfort with the Sanskrit language, enabling them to study the sacred Hindu text Bhagavad Gita with ease. The course is taught by dedicated HUA Faculty members via a user-friendly online platform featuring a learning model that uses live virtual classrooms.

The learning objectives of the course include relating to words and expressions from Bhagavad Gita Chapter 1 and 2, recognizing common Sanskrit words, prepositions, and phrases, discovering building blocks of the language through simple everyday conversation, and understanding the use of case-endings, verbal roots (dhatu) and their different forms, prefixes, suffixes, and indeclinables.

In the first quarter, students will learn to use pronouns, persons, and numbers and identify and use verbal roots (dhatu) and their different forms according to the tenses. In the second quarter, they will learn the use of case-endings and continue practicing more with verbal roots (dhatu) and their different forms and tenses. They will also learn different forms of adjectives and substantives and understand declensions for consonant-ending nouns.

In the third quarter, students will learn to use appropriate case endings for prepositions, distinguish between close-sounding letters in conjuncts, and learn gender as applied to cardinal and ordinal numbers. In the final quarter, they will understand the use of the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 7th, and vocative case-endings and research grammatical aspects of sacred Hindu text Bhagavad Gita Chapter 1 and 2.

BGTS – Beginner Phase is structured in the form of 4 quarters (1 year) sequence, 1.5 Credit hours each, which will add up to 60 hours of instruction and 120 hours of self-study in total. The Program is structured innovatively using the curriculum and textbooks designed by Samskrita Bharati USA (SBusa.org), and the course will be based upon material contained in the SBusa published books, “GeetA-sopAnam” (Part 1) and “GeetA-praveshaH” (Part 1, Volume 1), augmented with other appropriate course content.
