The Essential Elements of Vedic Science and Vedanta
The course, Applied Vedic Science – Advanced (Vedanta) (SAN8110), is a deeper exploration into the philosophies based on the last portions of the Vedas, Vedanta. The different schools of thought in regard to Vedanta differ not only in their interpretation but also in their teachings and worldview. The rich tradition of philosophical debates among these schools still thrives today. Through studying the different ontologies and teachings of these schools, students will gain an in-depth understanding of the nature of the Vedas.
The medium of instruction is Sanskrit, and this course will introduce students to the ontological frameworks of the three schools of Vedanta: Advaita, Visistadvaita, and Dvaita, through their primers. Students will have the opportunity to:
Understand the various ways the same ontological information is presented through the darsanas, all rooted in the Vedic tradition. Recognize the differences in language used by the different schools of Vedanta to present their teachings.
This elective course is part of the MA in Sanskrit or Masters’ Certificate in Sanskrit program and is offered in the Spring 2023 quarter. The course focuses on Sanskrit Studies and through an examination of Vedanta and Vedic science, students will gain a deeper appreciation of the philosophy and teachings of the Vedas.
