REFLECTIONS ON HINDU STUDIES – AN EYE OPENER- HINDU UNIVERSITY OF AMERICA
Hindu University of America offers many courses such as: B. Vedic Courses, Sanskrit Courses, Vedic Study Courses, Hindu Vedas.
When I was introduced to the Hindu Studies course from the Hindu University of America, I was skeptical about what I would gain from the course. The question that occurred to me was, “Is the course conducted by a Hindu or an outsider, as is the norm in Hindu departments of some Western universities?” Even if it was conducted by a non-Hindu, I had the impression that it would be like learning the meaning of some complex verses from our scriptures. I never expected to get answers to my long unanswered questions. The course opened my eyes and continues to open my eyes. Every slide from every presentation was informative; in week 2 I was thinking "I wish I could have done this course sooner".
Even though I come from a traditional family with Hindu leanings, even though I have a good understanding of how our history has been changed and manipulated, the feeling of not being able to give correct and convincing answers to some of the questions asked by outsiders (e.g. about the caste system) has haunted me for a long time troubled
Very early on, when I read about the colonizer and colonization, I felt anger. How could it have happened? How could the colonizers see an advanced civilization and think of destroying or manipulating it? I was actually saddened to learn how they made our people ashamed of our own tradition and culture, how they made our people disparage our own medical systems like Ayurveda just because it was not recognized by the colonizers. Things like – How they took all our Sanskrit texts and then claimed it was a dead language; How they erased the name 'Gowri Shankar' from history and called it 'Mt Everest'; It was really interesting to know how Bharat's GDP - which was the highest compared to all other countries before its colonization - changed after the paradigm shift. I felt extremely sad and angry when I learned about many libraries, apart from Takshashila and Nalanda, that were burnt and how many remaining texts were looted.
